Why is an accountability partner crucial in fitness?
Committing to your physical fitness is not an easy task. If it was easy everyone would be doing it, especially with all of the free online resources and gyms made available to us.
You need someone to hold you accountable in order to make any movements in the right direction. We know it takes 21 days to start a new habit so it is crucial to have someone’s support during this transition time period.
Accountability – as defined is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions. So if you say you are going to do it then you need to do it. Some people fear accountability. I make goals or in the past I have made them and I shared them with no one! NOT GOOD! You can’t function that way. Who is holding you accountable? You can go at it alone if you want but it can also be a hindrance! What’s from stopping you wiping your hands of the goal without it “affecting” anyone…except yourself!
So you decide to set a goal – 30 days to lose 10 pounds. Now with you keeping this agreement to yourself, who knows if you are working towards that goal and if you are stuck who can you turn to for support? Yeah, no one!
Accountability builds trust – whether you are working on your own goals or with someone to reach theirs, trust is very important in accountability. It promotes entrusting or protecting your goal and that you are emphasizing how important your commitment is to your pledge to your specific goal.
People fear accountability because they fear failure – What if I don’t reach the goal I set for myself? The 30 days will pass and I barely broke double digits! You can’t do it all by yourself! You are HUMAN! Life happens, motivation levels drop and will fall off the wagon sometimes.
Having an accountability partner to motivate you and lift you out of your momentary periods of stress is HUGE in your ability to succeed and reach your goal! They can help you think straight when you can’t. They can support with ideas and ways around your road block.
You cannot do this by yourself! We have this over-exaggerated ideology of what we are capable of. Humans need companionship and we need people around us to be our support system. Find your one person that you can confide in and recruit as your accountability person and watch how quickly you will reach your fitness goals!
